“Yes; I love it!  The sea is everything....  Its breath is pure and healthy.  It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.  The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. …. There only is independence!  There I recognize no masters!  There I am free!”

-Captain Nemo to Professer Aronnax

(20,000 Leagues Under the Sea)

Throughout both our cultural past and nautical history, mankind has maintained a venerable fascination with maritime activities. The spirit of the conquest and the allure of the deep seas have continually set the stage for legends, tales, epics, and folklore. Little Odysseys references these seafaring chronicles through the paintings, drawings and sculpture of nine artists.

The seduction to master the world’s vast ocean basins presents conflict between man and the sea.  Brave sailors, smitten pirates and military conquestors are recurrently lured to embark on heroic expeditions in pursuit of their own aquatic discoveries and territorial sequesters.

Below the façade of the ocean-line, mysteries dwell and lurk. Legends shroud the depths of the sea with accounts of the Bermuda Triangle, the lost city of Atlantis and mythological sea deities and creatures.  The desire to understand the phenomenon surrounding these marvels has resulted in numerous theories from the scientific to the unlikely.

Little Odysseys uniquely explores the desire to conquer the oceanic front as well as to understand the wonders of these open waters through each artist’s fresh narrative on this boundless territory.
