Artist Overview | Barnaby Furnas

New York-based artist Barnaby Furnas (b. 1973) has dealt with “the personal in a historical way, and the historical in a personal way” throughout the entirety of his career. Tackling the more dramatic themes of the human condition, Furnas’ monumental and tradition-bound subjects have evolved from historical events to more mythical and religious iconography. His diverse and deft cache of painterly techniques, including pouring, splashing, patterning, and even burning, are often integrated into his compositions and converge with their depictions in a truly tactile experience of the picture plane.

Furnas has had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; Victoria Miro Gallery, London, UK; Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Denver, CO; and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK. His work may be found in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston, TX; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA, amongst others. Furnas was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1973, and currently lives and works in Philadelphia.
