Poly and Pan both employ the same antique quilt to craft two distinctive pieces of art. The original quilt featured an 8-point star prominently featured in Pan's creation. In this piece, the star was carefully cut out, leaving behind a void in the shape of a star. Subsequently, it was reformed to create two distinct polygons. Sanford's intention in this process was to allow the material to guide the form and composition, resulting in a captivating interplay between the rigid lines of geometry and the softness of the textiles.
In the case of Poly, Sanford took a different approach. The border of the star quilt was reconfigured by utilizing the outer points of the star, giving rise to a double polygon. The centers of these polygons are marked by four carefully executed folds, which are then peeled back to reveal an underlying floral textile. Sanford's interest in Opt Art is evident in this piece, where she skillfully blurs the boundaries between soft and hard elements, painting and sculpture, and the organic and geometric realms.
The title "Poly" itself carries significance, alluding to multiplicity and adaptability. It symbolizes the capacity to exist comfortably within what may initially appear to be opposing forces, ultimately coexisting harmoniously within the same artistic plane.
The artwork is mounted on felt, which not only adds to the tactile and sensory experience but also solidifies its identity as fiber-based. This distinctive choice gives the quilt a low-relief quality, which blurs the line between 2D and 3D.
