First exhibited in 1996, the extruded Lot paintings (the numeric titles correspond with the day that he started each work) position Moffett firmly within the tradition of the nonfigurative monochrome. In his signature application of paint, Moffett forces volumes of oil paint to stand up rather than lay flat on the surface of the canvas. While monochromatic, the extruded works are not devoid of content. Each painting is a rigorous color study by the artist of the pigment used. Sculpting with the paint, he introduces subtle gradations in the chosen hue as his forms reflect light differently based on their position in the composition and the overall environment for the work.
