Glitch is part of Sanford's quilt series entitled "Codex," which includes mixed-media paintings, sculptures, assemblages, and drawings done directly on or made from antique quilts. This series is inspired by the long-debated historical narrative that quilts doubled as signposts along the Underground Railroad escape routes throughout the nineteenth century. This process, like social and linguistic code-switching, recognizes material and temporal plurality, as the quilts signal their original creator's intent and the new layers of meaning given to them through Biggers's artistic intervention.
Glitch blurs the line between a two and three-dimensional work. The undulating surface pushes the patchwork pieces out of their organized grid formation, forcing them to 'glitch,' veer off course, and step out of line. This rippling effect alludes to movement, similar to the result of looking at water. Glitches are information disrupted and subverted, shapeshifting and transforming conventional patterns (such as the grid in this example) and providing ways to see from a different point of view.
