As one of the preeminent members of the Gutai Art Association, Atusko Tanaka’s (1932-2005) practice was committed to exploring the relationships between art, technology, and physicality which she considered inextricably linked by the intangible elements of light, sound, space and electricity. Her earliest works incorporated electric bells, bulbs and cords to bring energy quite literally to her work. In later paintings such as "97A," Tanaka began translating these motifs into painting using industrial enamel paint. The resulting work offers an intriguing insight into Tanaka’s subconscious and spontaneous process.
