In his newest work, “Lot 080820 (open red)”, Donald Moffett presents a new development in his treatment of the resin medium, resulting in an alluring depth of color. Moffett punctures the surface of his painting, distorting traditional painting form and inviting implications of the human body, botanical forms and bullet holes. First exhibited in 1996, the Lot paintings (the numeric titles correspond with the day that he started each work) position Moffett within the tradition of the nonfigurative monochrome. This body of work bridges Moffett’s different interests as the paintings seamlessly manifest a studied commitment to painterly practice, an interest in biological forms and engagement with contemporary socio-cultural issues.
