"Aluminum/White House Unmoored" is from Donald Moffett’s (b. 1955, San Antonio, TX) “D.C.” series; these works combined painting and video to explore historically loaded symbols of American power. Moffett’s densely painted canvas acts as a screen for his handheld videos of the White House. By looping and projecting the footage directly onto the painting, Moffett brings movement to a traditionally static medium. The highly textured surface of the painting is imbued with energy through the interplay of light and shadow, to create an immersive experience not ordinarily associated with painting. Flickering in and out of focus, the familiar landmark takes on a haunting presence and surveillance-like appearance, a reminder of the sinister underbelly of patriotism in our country.
