Los Angeles-based artist Anthony Pearson first began his Transmissions sculpture series in 2010, as a means of translating his drawings into three-dimensional space. The steel-cut forms are inspired by the drawings that served as source materials for his Solarization photography series, the name of which refers to a darkroom process in which areas of white and black are tonally reversed. In this way, the sculptures are part of an ongoing cycle of transformation in Pearson's work, one that explores how the visual and conceptual experience of a single gesture can change through time and media. With the shift to sculpture, the intimate scale and delicate lines of the drawing are replaced with a commanding monumentality that invites a physical engagement with the viewer.
