FactSheet: Los Angeles-based artist Anthony Pearson (b. 1969) is well-known for his sensitivities to materials. His practice originated in photography. By experimenting with the formal limits of the medium, Pearson found a visual vocabulary that is rooted in abstraction and explores the balances between positive and negative, lightness and darkness. He continues to investigate these dichotomies in media such as plaster, bronze and clay. His use of the materials elevates their inherent qualities and yields understated poetic experiences within them.
This work belongs to Pearson's "Flares" series, versions of which he made between 2007 and 2012. Each is a unique C-print, whose image is a scanned and enlarged negative from Pearson's practice of photographing the sun.
