Underlying Serge Alain Nitegeka’s (b. 1983, Rwanda) practice is his own history with forced migration. Through his paintings he has mined this experience to examine notions of barriers, both physical and psychological. In his newest body of work, produced for his current solo exhibition at Marianne Boesky Gallery, the artist has reintroduced the figure for the first time since his early drawings. "Migrant: Studio Study V" features a self-portrait of the artist trapped and restricted within the broader abstract field of the canvas, amplifying the sensation of a body under stress.
