"The House was Quiet and the World was Calm" is part of Jennifer Bartlett’s (b. 1941, Long Beach, CA) "Fire" series, one of four that meditate on the elements. Throughout the series, a bright orange fire rages, energizing the natural world around it. Meanwhile, Bartlett manipulates our sense of space, depth and narrative as elements within the scene reappear as sculptural forms set on the floor in front of the painting.
