Meant to debut as part of Frieze Sculpture 2020 at Rockefeller Center curated by Brett Littman, Ghada Amer's ambitious garden installation, tenitled Women’s Qualities, was first conceptualized and installed in Busan, South Korean in 2000 where she undertook a simple study, asking members of the public what qualities they found most important in women. Twenty years on, the artist revisited the piece in New York, combining gender stereotypes that she encountered in Busan in 2000 with perspectives from Americans in 2020. The responses are written with flowers to create a living portrait of the impossible “woman ideal."
“In 2000 Busan, where descriptors such as 'submissive' and 'sexy' were prevalent, the work highlighted a prevailing traditional view of woman as object and subservient. From speaking to diverse social groups in 2020 New York City, where words such as 'kind' and 'nurturing' sit alongside 'resilient' and 'independent,' the installation today reveals the flip-side of the conventional patriarchal image, with the equally impossible and unrealistic view of woman as a modern goddess and wonder woman," observes Amer.
