Marianne Boesky Gallery is pleased to present Sanford Biggers’s Cheshire (Janus) (2023) for Frieze Sculpture 2023 in collaboration with MASSIMODECARLO. Cheshire (Janus), a hanging, double-sided smile, makes reference to an array of recognizable cultural symbols—from the unnerving grin of the Cheshire Cat to the racist caricatures of 19th-century minstrel shows. Biggers complicates and questions these signifiers, ultimately offering new understandings of collective mythologies and traditions.
